From Puppy love to Romeo

Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen (TOP 500 REZENSENT) (REAL NAME) Rezension bezieht sich auf: Dolly (Audio CD) Another 4-CD collection of Dolly's music, following at a relatively short interval after the European 4-CD box The Tour Collection in the summer of 2008. Despite having the European box and many other Dolly Parton compilations and original albums, I still regarded this as an essential purchase. Whereas the European box omitted a lot of the hits, this box contains the vast majority of them as well as plenty of less obvious tracks. One interesting feature of this set is that it is the first compilation of Dolly's music to seriously integrate Dolly's duets with Porter Wagoner with her solo music. Previous compilations of Dolly's solo music have rarely included more than one Porter Wagoner duet, if they included any at all. The European box includes three, two of which are among the eleven featured here.
The set is presented in chronological order, beginning with the two tracks from her 1959 Goldband single (Puppy love / Girl left alone). Following these tracks are several tracks that Dolly recorded while looking for that elusive breakthrough. They are interesting, but if one compares them to Lesley Gore in America or Helen Shapiro in Britain, both of whom had considerable success as teenagers in the sixties, it's easy to see that Dolly hadn't found the secret to success. The first real sign that things were picking up came when Bill Phillips (an otherwise obscure country singer) recorded Put it off until tomorrow (with Dolly's vocal backing) and had a top ten country hit with it. Though credited as a Bill Phillips solo, Dolly is quite prominent on the recording, which is included here. Bill followed that hit by recording The company you keep (another song written by Dolly) and taking that also into the country top ten, but that song isn't featured here. I haven't heard it, but I don't think Dolly sang on that hit, which would explain its absence.
Dolly made her debut in the country charts with Dumb blonde and from then on, much of the material is familiar. All the really important solo country hits are included. It is good to see Comin' for to carry me home (a top 30 country hit) making its American debut on a Dolly compilation. It has previously appeared on a British compilation of Dolly`s early music, Country girl, which is long out of print. More recently, it has appeared on an American multi-artist country gospel collection. It's a pity that Washday blues (also featured on Country girl) wasn't included, but surely its time for re-issue must come soon. Tracks previously released on CD just once each (Gypsy Joe and me, Evening shade, Will he be waiting, On my mind again, Kentucky gambler) make a welcome re-appearance here.
Among the other rarities featured here, three previously unreleased recordings may sound familiar. God's coloring book (a track from Here You Come Again), Everything's beautiful in it's own way (a track from The Winning Hand) and What will baby be (a track from Slow Dancing with the Moon) are songs that Dolly originally recorded much earlier, and those versions are presented here. The more familiar version of God's colouring book is itself a CD rarity, having only appeared (so far) on the short-lived re-issue of Here You Come Again. The familiar version of Everything's beautiful in it's own way is a duet with Willie Nelson, which became a top ten country hit and has subsequently appeared on several Dolly compilations. I knew that Willie's vocals were overdubbed and that Dolly recorded nothing new for The Winning Hand, but I thought Dolly's vocals were from her Monument days. The version of the song in this box is a 1969 recording, so if Dolly also recorded the song for Monument, it's another yet-unheard rarity in its solo form.
Great as all those tracks are, the most important previously unreleased track is Eugene Oregon, a song that I've never heard before in any form. It is an upbeat song in which Dolly expresses her thanks to the people of that city for making her feel welcome.
Among the eleven Porter and Dolly duets, the compilers found no room for three top five country hits (If teardrops were pennies, Say forever you'll be mine, Makin' plans), which is slightly disappointing, but anybody who really wants them can find these tracks easily elsewhere including on The Essential Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. The eleven tracks selected included ten major country hits plus Jeannie's afraid of the dark, which charted despite being a B-side.
Like the European box, this box has little to offer those fans who only love Dolly's pop-country music from 1977 to 1986. Most of the obvious hits from the period are here, the major omissions being the 1982 version of I will always love you (but the 1973 version is included), Real love (a duet with Kenny Rogers) and Hard candy Christmas (which isn't a Christmas song but these days is easier to find on Christmas albums). The surprise inclusion from this period is the 1984 version of What a heartache, from the Rhinestone soundtrack, which is also represented by the hits from it, Tennessee homesick blues and God won't get you.
Post-1986, this set contains the big hits and some lesser hits from Dolly's two most important Columbia albums (White Limozeen, Eagle When She Flies) but ignores the Trio albums with Linda and Emmylou. The set ends with Romeo, recorded in 1992 but released in 1993. However, all the later music is still readily available so its omission leaves plenty of room for Dolly's early music, which is the primary reason to buy this set.
This is a well-packaged collection that will surely please fans of traditional country music, especially those who complain that their needs are not catered for. We still await the release of many original albums from the period 1968-1975, but we keep hoping.
